Since 1983, ASA has prepared aspiring and accomplished sailors with eight areas of certification, categorized primarily by boat size. Following are some highlights:

Basic Keelboat. This courses teaches the basics, such as trimming the sails, issuing commands, and terminology. Students learn on 20 to 27-foot sloop-rigged keelboats in mild wind and sea conditions.

Basic Small Boat. Instructors demonstrate how to pilot a centerboard or multi-hull boat in calm waters. Skills taught range from responsibilities of the crew to preventing and recovering from capsizing.

Bareboat Cruising. This course covers multi-day trips on 30 to 45-foot vessels. During moderate to heavy weather, participants hone their skills at handling emergencies, anchoring and mooring, and using auxiliary engines.

Other topics. ASA certifies students in several other domains, such as celestial navigation, charting offshore passages, marine weather forecasts, and the use of radar.
